WHILE Nqobizitha Siziba-Dube made a name for himself on the comedy circuit, his television and radio adventures gave him an extra edge in the industry.
Q Dube, as he is popularly known, partnered DJ Butterfly for the Breakfast Show on Power FM until he was unceremoniously given the boot.
While getting fired would be the end of the road for some individuals, the comic’s departure from Power FM paved the way for new opportunities as he has managed to rekindle his comedy career south of the Limpopo.
Having relocated to South Africa earlier this year, it seems his ancestors have remembered him as new doors have opened. He recently headlined the Cape Town Comedy Club from Wednesday September 5 to Sunday September 9.
Being among the top 10 comedy clubs in the world and probably the best on the continent, to be chosen to be a headline act at Cape Town Comedy Club is a dream for many comedians.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail Society, Q Dube was ecstatic at having been given a slot at such a prestigious stage, highlighting that more opportunities are opening up.
“The Cape Town Comedy Club is listed as one of the top 10 clubs in the world and I am honoured that they saw me fit to headline their esteemed establishment for five nights in a row,” said Q.
“Since I moved this side, I have managed to make wonderful connections in the comedy and movie industry. I have also played at all major clubs and a lot of smaller joints that I never knew existed, for example, hosting gigs in Soweto.”
He said his relocation was driven by the desire to grow as a comic and explore new territories.
“I moved to SA because I felt I had done all I could in Zimbabwe. I felt I had reached the ceiling in terms of growth. I have acted, been on radio, done adverts, voice-overs, stand-up comedy and have promoted shows, yet I still had nothing to show for it except a name, so I decided to leave and challenge myself by starting at the bottom again,” said Q Dube.
On his departure from Power FM, he said that while he had been fired unceremoniously, he cherishes the experience.
“Power FM was a fun time and learning curve for me. I had done radio before that but not at that level of pressure. It taught me a lot about myself and my ability to work with others, for example, Butterfly wanted to kill me half the time but also happens to be one of my closest friends to date.
“I have no idea why I was fired but one day I was just told not to return because of something I allegedly said on air and off air supposedly, but it is all love, no harm done.”
Q Dube has been doing comedy since 2010 and to date has performed at every major stage in Zimbabwe, including Hifa, Shoko Festival, Intwasa Festival and many other high profile events.
He has also had a stint in the USA where he performed in several cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Texas, Kentucky, Indiana and New York.
Last year, he was the recipient of the Outstanding Comedian Award at the National Arts Merit Awards.
